The Cake Martinelli is a novelty from the Bonci Pastry Shop, created in honor of Giovanni Martinelli, the talented seventeenth-century Florentine painter. A genuine artisanal dessert, without preservatives: the soft, delicious leavened dough is prepared with almond and carrot flour, filled with a veil of apricot jam and doused with an old-fashioned, pleasantly spiced liqueur, alchermes. The history of Pastry Shop Bonci began in 1953 with brothers Gino and Giuseppe, who opened a bakery in Montevarchi in Valdarno. Today the pastry shop has become a symbol of traditional craftsmanship, with strong ties to Tuscan food and wine history, but with a desire to create new specialties and sought-after flavor combinations. In recent years, the pastry shop has been joined by gourmet products such as giardiniere, mustards and jellies.
