Easter hampers: history of an ancient tradition
The custom of giving Easter hampers has distant origins: its history is linked to the indispensable emblem of Easter, the egg, a universal symbol of rebirth and life since Antiquity, which we still give today as a sign of good wishes and prosperity.
From pagan rites to Christian tradition
The powerful symbolism of the egg as the fulcrum of the creation of the Universe, life and renewal is already present in the mythology of the Egyptians and in the rituals of the most ancient cultures: the Persians, for example, exchanged chicken eggs at the arrival of Spring, the season when nature awakens in all its beauty. With Christianity, the egg became a symbol of the tomb in which life is renewed and thus of Jesus' resurrection: hence the tradition of exchanging Easter eggs to celebrate this occasion.
The Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages this custom became increasingly widespread: citizens exchanged Easter hampers each year with boiled chicken eggs decorated with leaves and flowers. Then the first artificial eggs produced in precious metals and finely decorated were born, intended for the nobility and the wealthy classes.
The Nineteenth Century
In the 1800s we find the masterpieces created by Peter Carl Fabergé's workshop for the Czars of Russia. The first "Fabergé egg" was commissioned by Alexander III as an Easter gift for his wife: it was made of white enameled platinum, looking just like a chicken egg. Inside was another one made of gold (the yolk), which in turn contained a hen revealing two other prized gifts... See what a surprise?
The chocolate egg
The first chocolate egg was prepared in France around 1700 at the court of the Sun King, but it was a full egg, not a hollow one: for that we have to wait until 1828 when Dutch confectioner Van Houten invented a mold suitable for obtaining the fine chocolate one, hollow inside, an unfailing delicacy on Easter tables.
